Music competition winners to perform March 8
Young winners of the annual Bach Competition, Gail Newby Concerto Competition and Antelope Valley College Concerto Competition, sponsored by the Antelope Valley Symphony Orchestra and Master Chorale, will perform 8 p.m. March 8 at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center, 750 W. Lancaster Blvd., Lancaster.
As the first place winner of the Gail Newby Concerto Competition, 24-year-old Anna Volovitch, Cerritos, will perform the first movement of Saint-Saen’s Piano Concerto No. 2 as part of the Antelope Valley Symphony Orchestra’s concert.
Volovitch will share the program with second place winner, Chandler Yu, a 13-year-old violinist from Long Beach, who will perform Mendelssohn’s Concerto in E minor, Movement 1.
Joining the Newby competition winners is Sarah Gibson, of Palmdale, winner of the first AV College Concerto Competition. .
Volovitch and Gibson also received scholarships of $400 each for their accomplishments. Yu was awarded $200. Other top competitors not performing are Siranush Sahakyan, third place, and Joseph Tsai, Antares Boyle and Stephany Bai, honorable mentions.
In a 7 p.m. recital prior to the concert, four first-place winners of the AVSOMC Bach Competition will perform. They are Sevanna Abramyan, 11, of Glendale, Ani Bukujian, 14, Glendale, Jonathan Mamora, 12, Colton, and Monica Chen, 15, Tarzana.
These first place division winners received scholarships of $200 each. Three second place division winners received $100 scholarships: Shane Maurer, 12, of Ridgecrest, Evan Luo, 10, Lancaster, and Quynh Le, 13, Walnut.
Daniel Zu, 11, Lancaster, was awarded honorable mention for his performance in the Bach Competition, Level I piano for performers 12 and younger. In Level II for those 13-18, James Baumgarten, 14, Thousand Oaks, received honorable mention.
The Bach competition was started nine years ago to promote achievement in the arts by young people, according to Dr. David Newby, artistic director. The Gail Newby Concerto Competition is in its fifth year and is open to young musicians under the age of 25. Gail Newby, the late wife of David Newby, was the principal keyboard player for the symphony for many years and an adjunct instructor at Antelope Valley College. The college’s own concerto competition was initiated this year, as part of an effort to create additional performance opportunities for AVC applied music students.
Sponsorship funding for AVSOMC’s youth programs is provided by Lancaster-West Rotary Club (scholarship underwriting), The Boeing Company, Lancaster Performing Arts Center Foundation and Wanda Gallerson, individual donor.
