When businesses speak, AVC listens

Gearing up existing educational programs to serve industry is just one way Antelope Valley College’s quick response to needs has benefited the entire community.

The college has also created several educational programs in recent years including:

  1. The Sheriff’s Training Academy at Antelope Valley College (AVC). In cooperation with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the college created the sheriff’s third training academy in 2006 to boost the ranks of the sheriff’s department. The department runs a deputy training program as well as a custody assistant program at AVC.
  2. Radiologic technology. Radiologic technology – to begin this fall -- is the newest academic program. Demand from hospitals for radiologic technicians prompted the college to create the program.
  3. Respiratory therapy. AVC graduated its first class of respiratory therapists in June.
  4. Municipal firefighting academy. The municipal firefighting academy, which started in August 2007, joins an existing wildland firefighting program.

Advisory committees, which include representatives from business and the community, exist throughout the college to provide educators with input on programs so that they are in line with industry standards and community needs.

“In the end, everyone benefits. Employers are able to get the skilled workers they need. Students obtain education and job skills without incurring a mountain of debt,” said Steve Standerfer, director of public and governmental relations for AVC.
