Members of the campus community returning to work for the start of the fall semester Aug. 25 learned of the death of Dr. Fenggang Zhang over the weekend.
A native of China, Zhang had taught math at AVC since 1991. Zhang died while visiting at his daughter's home in Los Angeles, according to Dr. Les Uhazy, dean of the Math/Science Division.
"He was a wonderful teacher of mathematics and a great friend. He will be missed," Uhazy said.
Zhang attended Fudan University in China where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees. He earned a doctorate at State University of New York, Stonybrook.
Zhang, 63, decided to pursue a career as a math teacher while he was a high school student.
"My interest is to communicate with young people, to pass my experience to the people," he said during a 2000 interview. "As a society, we should try our best to help our young people."
The campus community extends condolences to his family.
