Rarely seen German films to be shown at AVC

Three German films that provide unique perspectives on German life and culture will be shown at Antelope Valley College 7 p.m. Feb. 25, March 3 and March 17 as part of the college’s Flex Program for staff development. Each showing will occur at 7 p.m. in the Board Room, SSV 151, 3041 W. Ave. K, Lancaster.

The screenings are free and open to the public.“We are showing films that are not available to the public,” said Dr. Thomas Shey, who has organized the event along with Dr. Matthew Jaffe. The series begins Feb. 25 with “Kaspar Hauser,” a detective story of the 19th century involving the purported illegitimate son of German aristocracy.“Nickolai Church,” the March 3 film, follows the decline and fall of the East German “iron curtain” in 1989 as seen through the eyes of a German family.

The film, which includes pro- and anti-communist perspectives, culminates in the ongoing struggle between the Protestant Church and the East German secret police. The series concludes March 17 with “Goodbye Lenin,” a comedy about an East Berlin housewife and minor Communist functionary who goes into a lengthy coma prior to the fall of the wall and East German regime.

As the woman emerges from her coma, her son and his friends – concerned that sudden shock could kill her -- concoct an elaborate charade to hide the fact that her beloved system is gone. All films contain English subtitles. The films were obtained from the German Cultural Center in Los Angeles.
