If you wish to earn a half unit of college credit for orientation, you can enroll in HD 198O, Orientation to College, instead of completing this web version. HD 198O is offered online and on campus. If you choose to proceed to complete the orientation in this format, here's what you will learn.
First you will learn about how to apply for admission to AVC. You will then learn about the assessment in English and Math and how the results relate to course selection. There are exemptions from these assessments that you will learn about as well.
Next you will learn why completing the orientation is important as well as who is exempted from it. You will examine how to choose an academic program related to your career goal and how to register for classes. This discussion will include information about deadlines for paying fees and adding and dropping classes.
After that you will learn how to purchase a parking permit, how to obtain a student identification card and the usefulness of purchasing the Associated Student Organization (ASO) sticker for the card.
During this first part of the orientation you will cover other important topics such as purchasing textbooks, and the importance of attending the first meeting of your classes and all subsequent meetings. Later in the orientation you will have the opportunity to explore the home pages of several very important support services that you might want to utilize to enable your success at AVC. Also, during this part of the orientation you will become acquainted with several tools for success, including the college catalog and class schedule.
The next section will involve a review of policies and procedures that can help you avoid probation and dismissal as well as steps to take if you should become subject to one of these conditions. This discussion includes information about the probation and dismissal policy, the college's attendance policy, academic honesty and the student code of conduct. All of these are contained in the catalog and you will have the opportunity to review them in the online catalog.
Lastly, you will have the opportunity to explore several very useful support services. This will be accomplished through links to the various services' home pages. After you have explored the home page of each service you will be required to complete a short quiz on that service. Credit for this orientation is based on your successful completion of all the quizzes.
